Our heritage
A heritage woven by hand
In Akwete, an Ndoki community in Ukwa East, Abia State, weaving is more than a way of making cloth. It is a body of knowledge, passed from one generation of women to the next.
Over a century of cloth
Akwete cloth has a documented history stretching back well over a century. It grew in the nineteenth century, as regional trade brought weavers new textiles, coloured yarns and design ideas.
Dada Nwakwata
Remembered as one of the great innovators of the craft. Historical accounts associate her with the wide, single-panel cloth Akwete became known for.
Kept by women
Girls learned beside their mothers, grandmothers and experienced weavers. What passed between them was a visual language and a livelihood.
